New York Rangers Fire Head Coach Alain Vigneault

Steven Armus

In addition to working full-time as a dermatologist, Dr. Steven Armus is a prairie technician and the owner of Native Prairie Restoration, a landscaping company in Franksville, Wisconsin. An avid sports fan, Steven Armus counts the New York Rangers as his favorite National Hockey League team.

Alain Vigneault took over as the head coach of the Rangers in the 2013-14 season and led the team all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Rangers qualified for the playoffs in each of the next three seasons but finished the 2017-18 season with their first losing record since the 2003-04 season. As a result, Vigneault was fired by general manager Jeff Gorton at the end of the season. Vigneault's assistants, Darryl Williams and Scott Arniel, were also released.
Gorton said that, while Vigneault is a terrific coach, the Rangers need a fresh voice in the locker room. The general manager expects to interview as many as 10 candidates for the job. Through five seasons with Vigneault as head coach, the Rangers compiled a regular season record of 226-147-37.
